A Division of Central Iowa Towing and Recovery

Central Iowa Fleet Solutions is the heavy-duty diesel repair division of Central Iowa Towing and Recovery. We exist because the truckers and fleet operators in this region needed something that did not exist here before: a shop that works exclusively on Class 6, 7, and 8 commercial diesel vehicles with the same diagnostic platforms the engine manufacturers use.

Our parent company, Central Iowa Towing and Recovery, has been operating in central Iowa for years. They know the roads, the corridors, and the operators in this region. When a truck breaks down on I-35 or I-80, Central Iowa Towing has been the call. But towing a truck to a repair shop that takes three days to diagnose a Cummins ISX fault code is not a solution. The region needed a diesel specialist shop that could receive a towed truck and have it diagnosed the same day. That is why Central Iowa Fleet Solutions was built.

One Call Covers Everything

Because we are a division of Central Iowa Towing and Recovery, a breakdown in Central Iowa does not require two phone calls. Call (515) 450-0366 and we dispatch the mobile tech. If the truck cannot be repaired on-site, our parent company handles the tow to our shop. Diagnosis, repair, and transport under one roof, one number, one company.

Our Shop: 2019 E Lincoln Way, Ames, Iowa

We built our shop at the intersection of I-35 and US-30 in Ames because it puts us at the geographic center of Iowa's commercial truck activity. I-35 carries freight from Kansas City to Minneapolis right past our door. US-30 runs east-west through Ames connecting western Iowa agricultural operations to eastern markets. From this location, we reach Ankeny in 25 minutes, Des Moines in 45, Boone in 20, and Marshalltown in 45.

The shop is equipped for everything from routine oil changes to complete engine overhauls. Diagnostic bays run CAT Electronic Technician, Cummins Insite, and Detroit DiagnosticLink on dedicated workstations. We stock commonly needed parts for CAT, Cummins, and Detroit engines so that diagnosis and repair happen the same visit whenever possible. Trucks that come to our shop do not sit waiting for parts to be ordered unless the repair requires a component we do not regularly stock.

What We Work On

We service Class 6, 7, and 8 commercial vehicles exclusively. No passenger cars. No light-duty pickups. Every technician, every diagnostic tool, and every stocked part in our shop is oriented toward heavy-duty commercial diesel. The platforms we service daily:

  • CAT: C10, C12, C13, C15, C18, 3406E. Diagnostics via CAT Electronic Technician (CAT ET).
  • Cummins: ISX15, X15, ISX12, ISM, ISL, ISB, ISC. Diagnostics via Cummins Insite.
  • Detroit Diesel: DD13, DD15, DD16, Series 60, MBE 900/4000. Diagnostics via Detroit DiagnosticLink.
  • Paccar: MX-11 and MX-13 in Kenworth and Peterbilt applications.
  • Navistar: A26, N13, N9 in International trucks.

Beyond engine work, we handle truck repair (brakes, transmission, clutch, suspension, driveline, electrical), trailer repair (brake systems, axle and suspension, lighting, doors, landing gear), DOT inspections with same-visit violation repair, fleet maintenance programs, heavy equipment diesel service, welding and fabrication, and tire service.

How We Diagnose: The Difference Between Us and a General Shop

The single biggest difference between Central Iowa Fleet Solutions and a general shop that does some diesel work on the side is how we diagnose problems. We run the same software platforms the engine manufacturers designed for these engines.

A general shop with a $200 generic OBD scanner can read a fault code. That code tells them which system triggered the fault. It does not tell them which cylinder's injector is degrading, whether the turbo actuator is responding within specification, what the fuel rail pressure deviation looks like under load, or whether the DPF actually needs replacement or just needs a proper forced regeneration under controlled conditions.

Our diagnostic tools provide that data. CAT ET shows injector trim values per cylinder, turbo performance history, and aftertreatment event logs. Cummins Insite provides trip data, regeneration history, VGT actuator performance, and individual injector contribution metrics. Detroit DiagnosticLink gives access to GHG14/GHG17 emissions control logic, SCR catalyst efficiency, and DEF dosing system diagnostics.

That diagnostic depth saves our customers money. It prevents the most expensive mistake in diesel repair: replacing components based on a fault code without verifying the root cause. We have seen trucks come in with $5,000 to $6,000 quotes for turbocharger replacement from other shops when the actual problem was a $200 charge air cooler pipe leak that was dropping boost pressure readings. The fault code pointed to the turbo. The diagnostic data pointed to the pipe.
