Diesel engine repair is our specialty, but a truck is more than an engine. Air brake systems, transmission and clutch, suspension and steering, driveline components, electrical systems, and cab climate control all need expert service, and problems in any of these systems can take a truck out of service just as fast as an engine fault. We handle all of it at our Ames shop and through mobile service across Central Iowa.

Air Brake Systems: The Most Common Non-Engine Repair

Air brake systems on commercial trucks are more complex than most owners realize. Dual air circuits feed the service brakes and spring brake chambers, an air dryer removes moisture from the compressed air supply, automatic slack adjusters maintain proper brake shoe clearance, and ABS sensors and modulators manage anti-lock function. A problem in any one of these components can cause anything from a subtle performance issue to a complete air system failure.

When a brake warning light comes on or you notice slow air buildup, a spongy pedal, or an audible air leak, the cause could be a failing compressor, a leaking air line, a cracked glad-hand fitting, a seized slack adjuster, a saturated air dryer cartridge, or an ABS wheel speed sensor fault. We diagnose systematically - checking air system pressure at each point, testing slack adjuster travel against specification, and pulling ABS fault codes - rather than replacing components until the warning light goes off.

Brake violations are one of the most common reasons trucks get placed out-of-service at Iowa weigh stations. We perform brake inspections and repairs together, so a truck that comes in for a brake check leaves with any issues actually corrected, not just identified.

Transmission and Clutch: Eaton Fuller, Allison, and Spicer

We service Eaton Fuller manual transmissions, Allison automatic transmissions, and Spicer auxiliary transmissions. Each platform has its own common failure patterns. Eaton Fuller manuals develop synchronizer wear from repeated shifting, particularly on trucks running frequent low-speed maneuvering like warehouse dock work. Allison automatics accumulate heat stress from repeated lock-up and unlock cycles in stop-and-go operation, and require Allison-specific diagnostic software to properly read fault codes and perform adaptive learn resets.

Clutch issues show up as slipping under load, difficulty engaging gears, or a shuddering sensation on takeoff. Clutch wear accelerates on trucks running heavy loads through hilly terrain or frequent stop-and-go cycles, common with grain haulers during harvest season and warehouse delivery trucks. We diagnose clutch wear with a proper inspection rather than assuming a full replacement is needed when adjustment or a partial component repair would solve the issue.

Suspension, Steering, and Driveline

Suspension issues affect ride quality, tire wear, and handling stability, particularly important for trucks running Iowa's mix of interstate highway and secondary roads. We service leaf spring and air ride suspension systems, steering linkage and king pins, and driveline components including u-joints, drive shafts, and differentials. Uneven tire wear, a pulling sensation while driving, or unusual vibration at highway speed are all signs worth having checked before they become a bigger repair or a safety issue.

Electrical Systems and Cab Climate Control

Modern commercial trucks have increasingly complex electrical systems - multiplexed wiring, multiple ECMs communicating over a data bus, and auxiliary electrical demands from lighting, refrigeration units, and onboard technology. We diagnose electrical faults systematically using proper wiring diagrams and multimeter testing rather than guessing at connectors. AC and heating system repair keeps your cab comfortable and, more importantly, keeps windows clear and defrosted during Iowa winters, which is a genuine safety issue on the road.

Mobile Truck Repair Across Central Iowa

Many truck repair issues can be diagnosed and fixed on-site without a shop visit. Brake adjustments, electrical faults, sensor replacements, and many suspension issues are within reach of our mobile technicians, who carry diagnostic tools and commonly stocked parts for these systems. When the repair requires shop equipment - an alignment rack, a lift, specialized tooling - we bring the truck to our Ames facility, with Central Iowa Towing and Recovery handling transport if needed.
