What to Do the Moment Your Truck Breaks Down

Get the truck as far onto the shoulder as safely possible and activate hazard lights and reflective triangles per DOT requirement. Then call (515) 450-0366 and tell us your mile marker, direction of travel, and engine type if you know it. That information lets us route the nearest available technician directly rather than working through a dispatch process that costs you time on the shoulder.

Stranded Right Now?

Call (515) 450-0366 immediately. We dispatch 24 hours a day, every day of the year, no exceptions for holidays or weekends.

Response Times Across Our Coverage Area

Response time depends on your location relative to our Ames shop. Within Ames and Story County, response is typically 15 to 20 minutes since this is our home base. Ankeny and the near-metro corridor run 25 to 35 minutes. Des Moines, West Des Moines, and Altoona typically run 45 to 60 minutes. Boone and Marshalltown fall in similar ranges depending on exact location. These are typical windows under normal conditions - severe weather or exceptionally high call volume can extend them, but we will give you an honest estimate when you call rather than a vague promise.

What We Can Fix Roadside vs. What Needs the Shop

Our mobile technicians carry the same diagnostic software we use in the shop - CAT Electronic Technician, Cummins Insite, and Detroit DiagnosticLink - along with commonly needed parts for the platforms we see most. This lets us fix a genuine range of problems on-site: sensor failures, fuel filter and water separator issues, minor electrical faults, air system leaks, DEF system faults, and many DPF-related derates that just need a proper forced regeneration rather than a component replacement.

Repairs that require shop equipment - a lift, a hydraulic press, specialized alignment tooling - need to come to our Ames facility. This includes major engine work like an injector set replacement or overhaul, most transmission jobs, and any frame or structural repair. We will tell you honestly on-site whether your truck is a roadside fix or a shop job, rather than attempting a repair that will not hold and sending you back out only to break down again.

Towing When On-Site Repair Is Not Possible

Central Iowa Fleet Solutions is a division of Central Iowa Towing and Recovery. When a repair genuinely requires our shop, our parent company handles the tow to our Ames facility as part of the same call. You are not left finding a separate towing company while your truck sits on the shoulder, and you are not paying for a tow to a random shop that then has to diagnose the problem from scratch. The truck comes to us, and we already know what we found roadside.

One Call Covers Everything

Diagnosis, roadside repair when possible, and tow to our shop when necessary - all coordinated through (515) 450-0366.

I-35 and I-80: Our Primary Response Corridors

These two interstates carry the bulk of Central Iowa's commercial truck traffic and account for most of our roadside calls. I-35 runs north-south through Ames and Ankeny toward the Des Moines metro. I-80 runs east-west through the southern part of our coverage area, intersecting I-35 at West Des Moines. We know these corridors well enough to estimate response time accurately from a mile marker alone, which speeds up dispatch versus needing a full address.

We also respond off the interstate system - county roads, agricultural routes during harvest season, and job sites for contractor and construction fleets. If you are not sure whether you are in our coverage area, call and ask. We would rather tell you honestly if we cannot reach you quickly than have you wait on an assumption.

Winter Roadside Calls: A Different Kind of Emergency

A breakdown in July on I-80 is an inconvenience. The same breakdown in January with a sub-zero wind chill is a genuine safety situation. Winter roadside calls require a different approach: getting to the driver quickly matters as much as fixing the truck, since a stranded driver in extreme cold faces real risk even inside the cab if the engine cannot run. We prioritize winter calls accordingly, and our dispatch process asks specifically about driver safety and cab heat status, not just the mechanical fault.

Common winter roadside issues include fuel gelling in extreme cold, batteries that fail on a cold morning start, and air brake systems that develop moisture-related freeze issues from repeated cycling. Our mobile trucks carry fuel additives, jump-start capability, and the tools to diagnose air system freeze-ups on-site, since these are the calls we see most during Iowa's coldest months.

Summer and Harvest Season Roadside Demand

Summer brings its own roadside pattern: cooling system failures from sustained high-load highway operation in heat, and a spike in agricultural equipment calls during harvest season from August through November. Grain trucks running hard through harvest cycle more miles per day than any other point in the year, and a breakdown during a tight harvest window costs an operation more than almost any other time. We staff up mobile capacity during harvest specifically because we know the call volume increases and the urgency for agricultural customers is higher than usual.

Fleet Accounts Get Priority Mobile Dispatch

For fleet accounts, mobile roadside calls receive priority dispatch ahead of routine scheduling. Because we keep per-unit service records, when a fleet account calls in with a breakdown, we often already know the truck's engine platform and recent service history before the technician arrives, which speeds up on-site diagnosis. If your fleet runs multiple trucks across Central Iowa regularly, setting up an account ahead of time means faster response when an actual emergency happens rather than starting from a blank slate on your first call.
