CAT engines built before 2007 (like the C15 and 3406E) are prized for mechanical simplicity, while newer CAT on-highway engines are less common since CAT largely exited the on-highway market. Detroit Diesel DD13/DD15/DD16 engines are tightly integrated with Freightliner and Western Star chassis and have strong factory support. These are the proprietary diagnostic software platforms each engine manufacturer builds for their own engines. CAT Electronic Technician (CAT ET) works with Caterpillar engines. A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) traps soot particles from exhaust gas before they exit the tailpipe, as required by EPA emissions standards since 2007. The DPF needs periodic regeneration - burning off accumulated soot at high exhaust temperatures (1,100 to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit) - to stay clear. Trucks running short-haul, stop-and-go routes rarely sustain the exhaust temperatures needed for passive regeneration, so soot builds up faster than it burns off. Extended idle time and interrupted active regeneration cycles (when a driver shuts down mid-regen) make the problem worse. Eventually the DPF reaches its maximum soot loading and the engine derates to protect the aftertreatment system.

A derate code alone does not tell you whether the DPF needs replacement. No. DPF and other emissions system "deletes" are illegal under the federal Clean Air Act, both for the shop performing the delete and the owner operating the vehicle afterward. We repair the DPF, DOC, EGR, and SCR systems to proper factory function.

DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) quality faults are typically caused by contaminated or degraded DEF fluid, a failing DEF quality sensor giving an inaccurate reading, or actual issues with the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system's ability to convert NOx. Frequent regeneration usually means the truck's operating pattern is not generating enough exhaust heat during normal driving to keep up with soot accumulation, so the engine control module is compensating with more frequent active (forced) regeneration cycles. It depends on how the vehicle operates. A highway tractor running consistent long-haul routes is reasonably well served by mileage-based intervals. But a truck running a PTO-driven crane, compressor, or pump for hours at a time, or a warehouse truck accumulating hundreds of dock-idle hours per month, wears the engine and drivetrain at a rate the odometer does not capture. For PTO-heavy and high-idle vehicles, we recommend engine-hour-based intervals instead of pure mileage.

Diesel fuel contains paraffin wax that begins to crystallize as temperatures drop, causing the fuel to cloud around 14 degrees Fahrenheit and gel completely around negative 10 to negative 15 degrees, depending on the fuel blend. Gelled fuel clogs filters and starves the injection system, causing hard starting or a no-start condition. Winter-blend fuel with lower gel points and proper fuel additives reduce this risk.
